‘It can go global’: Australia’s video games sector welcomes funding pledge

Australia’s video game sector has welcomed the Labor (ALP) pledge to reinstate a growth fund for game developers, claiming it has been ignored in recent years in favour of more popular startups like fintechs.

“These are small businesses, they’re developing skills and employing people — but there’s a cultural impediment here, like ‘they’re games, they’re for kids,'” says head of peak body the Interactive Games and Entertainment Association (IGEA), Ron Curry.

“Fintech seems to be getting a lot more excitement… and it seems like they [politicians] are going through the budget line by line, see “video games” and say, ‘get rid of that’,” says founder of SMG Studio, Ashley Ringrose.
